Beyond Iraq, '08 Issues Starting to Form

The big ones are going to be health care and immigration, and the two parties differ greatly on both.

Iran Says Israel, US Threaten MidEast

Right. The fact that Iran sponsors Hamas and Hezbollah, is pursuing a nuclear program in defiance of the UN, and is promoting violence in Iraq has nothing to do with destabilizing the Middle East. Not to mention the repeated calls for the destruction of Israel.

UN Closer to Deal on Iran Sanctions

As expected, another watered down resolution so that we don't hurt the business interests of certain countries.

Are Pro-Lifers Ready for Rudy?

Maybe not in the primary, but I think when faced with a choice between Rudy and Hillary they will support the GOP candidate.

The "Let's Lose Now" Caucus

A nice piece from National Review Online about the party of defeat.

Germans Challenge EU on Speed Limit

This is the perfect example of why the EU and the UN are ultimately doomed to failure. States will almost always exercise their sovereign authority over the wishes of a regional or world body when that state feels it is in its national interest.

The UN Security Council consistently fails to achieve anything of substance because the permanent members put national interests above global interests. Examples: North Korea, Iraq, Iran. The same can be said of the EU. Voters, when given a chance, rejected the EU constitution because it took away too much of their nations' sovereign powers.

Enabling Kurdish Illusions

I think we should help the Kurds establish their own state and then establish US bases in Kurdistan to counter Iranian influence in the region.

The Right-Sized Army

The other option is to reduce the number of global commitments. The current force structure is too small for all the engagements we are involved in right now, so there are only the two options: increase the force or reduce the missions.

Russian Democracy is Dying

This is a great piece from the American Enterprise Institute. Russia has struggled with efforts to become a democracy, and the people have become disillusioned. Putin is a former KGB guy who is consolidating power and setting up the next Presidential election so that he will still wield a lot of power.

Deal with Iran Like We Dealth with the Soviets

I'm not as optimistic as Mr. Ledeen about the prospects for non-violent regime change in Iran, but he is right when he says that all western governments failed, and some continue to fail, to see the Iraq war in its regional context.

The Truth About Union Intimidation

This article is dead on. The unions are claiming that their membership has been declining because companies intimidate workers to keep them from unionizing. But unions are just as guilty, if not more so, of intimidating workers to join unions. Then they give them no say in how their dues are spent.

Now the unions want to do away with the secret ballot. The secret ballot is a hallmark of American elections, at all levels. To take it away opens the door for more union intimidation of workers who may be threatened if they don't vote for the union.

Imams Removed From Flight to Sue

Big shock here. I'm actually surprised it took them this long, but I guess they were trying to milk US Airways out of some money without having to go to court. The airline, to its credit, is still standing by the actions of its employees. If these mimicked some of the actions known to have been taken by the 9/11 hijackers, they have no reasonable basis to sue. The judge should throw this one out.

The US and the UN Human Rights Council

This council is a farce and we are right to stay away from it. Why does the UN allow known human rights abusers to sit on the council? Because they are more interested in trying to have everyone get a long than in actually doing anything substantive.
