Thompson Would Improve '08 Race

I like Fred Thompson. In fact, he's probably the only guy who could challenge Giuliani's star power because he's a heavyweight in his own right. Plus, he's truly conservative, which would force the debate to the right. If he enters the race, I think Rudy has something to worry about.

Voter Discontent Widens GOP Field

This certainly is the most interesting Republican field we've had in quite some time, but I still think that Giuliani's star power is going to be nearly impossible for any of the other contenders to overcome. I maintain my position that GOP voters are willing to cut Rudy some slack to keep the White House.

The Pelosi Plan for Iraq

An excellent editorial from the Washington Post about the Dem's House plan for Iraq. It is political posturing at its finest. It ignores regional realities and the consequences of abandoning the Iraqi government. It is designed to win the next round of elections in 2008, no matter what the costs may be.

The Conservative Case Against Bush

Bush has been, for me at least, a huge disappointment. I think he's a strong wartime leader, but sometimes he just leaves me baffled with his decisions.

McConnell: GOP May Retake Senate

It's possible, but unlikely. More Republican seats than Democrat seats are in play, stacking the odds against retaking the Senate. But I guess it is possible.

GOP Voters Voice Anxieties on Party's Fate

The "Return to Reagan" theme was dominant at this year's Conservative Political Action Conference. That's all anyone talked about. But then guys like Romney and Giuliani got huge welcomes from the crowds and people thronged to see them. What this tells me is that while the GOP wants to return to the principles of Ronald Reagan, voters are going to sacrifice on some issues to keep the White House. They want a winner. Period.

Congress Demands Rove Testify About Attorneys

Why is this a story? In 1993, Clinton Attorney General Janet Reno demanded the prompt resignation of all 93 US Attorneys. And like Limbaugh said today, is this the new standard? Does this mean if a Dem wins the White House in '08 that they won't be able to fire attorneys without accusations about playing politics?

Gay Advocates Demand Apology From Pace

He should know better. You can't make statements like that when you represent the government. He was right, though, in only apologizing for inserting personal opinion. He is entitled to an opinion, just as the rest of us are.

Smokers Told to Quit Smoking at Home

This is what we have in store for us if the smoking nazis have their way in the states. You won't even be allowed to smoke at home. Yes, I know it's an apartment and not a freestanding home, but if the building owner permits it, since it's his building, it shouldn't be an issue.

Terror and Visas to the US

This is a real problem. With rising citizen populations of Muslims in Great Britain and other countries, there should be thorough screening of anyone boarding an airplane to fly to the US.

Senate Rejects Accountability

This typifies what is wrong with the Congress. Why would you NOT want accountability of billions of dollars in grants? Could it be because some of the money is funneled to home states and districts for projects that have nothing to do with homeland security?

German Lawmakers Want to Take Hitler's Citizenship

What's the point? Surely they have something better to do, like fight the EU on the speed limit for the autobahn. What about his birth country of Austria?

Al-Sadr's Fighters Feel Heat

It's important to keep the fighters off the streets, but al-Sadr will never go away of his own volition. He is currently hiding, probably in Iran, and he has pulled his leadership structure. If his command team remains intact, all he has to do is wait us out. It will be easy to recruit more fighters.

Shrine Bombing Debated as Turning Point

I don't think there's any question that the shrine bombing is what set off the sectarian killings on a wholesale level. The tensions and stress were already there. They just needed a spark.
